Singer/Songwriter Extras:
While Michele Vreeland and John Enghauser have outstanding releases that can accurately be placed under the singer/songwriter designation, there’s very little of the alt.country, folk or progressive bluegrass flavor that many listeners automatically assume will be the case with anything carrying this tag. Vreeland’s Never Not Myself has a pronounced rock/pop feel, while Enghauser’s Lost In the Pages intersperses Latin, jazz and blues sensibility within its rock framework.
Vreeland’s voice is smooth and prominent, but doesn’t lack intensity or authority. Her subjects include female empowerment and the nature of friendship (”Nico”) as well as optimism and identity (”LA Dream”). Some numbers feature acoustic backgrounds with minimal production, while others employ echo effects with multiple textures and layers. Still, the arrangements and focus outline Vreeland’s driving, confident leads and solid singing and writing skills.
Enghauser’s been involved in many musical styles dating back to his days playing rock in the ’90s. The title track of Lost In The Pages lyrically riffs on the erratic nature of stardom and the music business, while “Still Waters” and “Breathe Again” present a softer, sentimental side. But Enghauser, who plays bass, all the guitar and keyboard parts plus adds lead vocals, proves a masterful performer in every capacity.
Though neither Michele Vreeland’s nor John Enghauser’s discs fit into another area commonly seen as home to singer/songwriters — Americana — fans who enjoy intelligent lyrics, catchy yet not overly simplistic melodies and energetic playing and singing will enjoy Never Not Myself and Lost In The Pages.

Never Not Myself CD Cover
On her bio Michele claims to experience synesthesia, the condition where you can see color in music. This same condition was said to be experienced by Jimi Hendrix who based his album and title track Axis, Bold As Love on that very thing, “My red is so confident he flashes trophies of war and ribbons of euphoria/Orange is young, full of daring but very unsteady for the first go ’round /My yellow in this case is no so mellow /And all of these emotions of mine keep holding me from giving my life to a rainbow like you.”
Although Michele’s musicality is not nearly as psychedelic as you would expect based upon that revelation, the incorporation of her storytelling and poetry is strong. The title Never Not Myself is actually a reference from the insert poem. This poem also mentions several elements from the songs on this EP, including Michele’s best friend Nico, the free spirit who seems to be the focus of the song Nico.
The structure of these songs, including Want More and Understanding, are slow tempo acoustic to the point of almost being a cappella, until a sudden burst of full production chorus takes over. This sort of slow burn and boom is great for a live show. Michele is known to perform both solo and with a full band.
A few of the songs that appear on this EP could be singles as they follow all the contemporary pop rock rules; Wanted to Say has an Alanis Morrisette style and approach. The production choice of instruments like violins and chimes seems overdone when compared to the raw quality of these songs. However, the vocal layering on the album is well done, most especially on the song Understanding.
Lyrically the theme here is mostly “persistence of a dreamer” on songs like I’m A Person and LA Dream. The latter as well as Nico have great melodic hooks. Who I Am and Wanted to Say incorporate a lot of trip hop echo beats which sometimes seem disorienting in the mix, but are consistently interwoven making the album cohesive.

Hey there! I’m Janeane and you’re tuned to the Momz Rock the House show, where moms all over are letting loose on guitars, wailing on the drums, and singing like there’s no tomorrow or at least until the kids get home from school. I know I’ve been known to crank up my guitar and wail on the distortion while my kids are at the park and this was my time to straighten up. There’s nothing like some down time with a new amplifier and wah wah peddle. My poor neighbors! I’m still learning to use the thing!
On this week’s show, we have special guest Michele Vreeland who went from having a childhood in Salt Lake City, sneaking Beatles music into her house to having the complete opposite life with plenty of artistic freedom in Southern California. She’ll be talking about her latest music, gigs and on-line showcase on NBC. Way to go Michele. And also we’ll hear a song that many moms can relate to from the hilarious Sue Fabisch who writes and sings songs we can all laugh and sing to in this rollercoaster ride called motherhood. Plus music from Mom’s on the Edge, Motherhood Trio and so much more. Big Red Button is going to get us started with Secret.
